The ‘Roof of the World’ Festival was held on 25th September 2016 at Gulmit Gojal Hunza for the promotion of music to the new generation. This effort is to reinvigorate the tradition of local music and dances to attract tourists to the area from around the world.
Musicians, dancers and other artists enthralled the audience during the daylong “Roof of the World Festival” held in Gulmit, the headquarters of Gojal Teshil, District Hunza.
The festival was organized by Bulbulik Heritage Center, an institution established with the finanical support of USAID for promotion of music, language and other aspects of the region’s cultural heritage.
Students trained at the Bulbulik Music School won accolades for performing in front of the audience. They played Rabob, Sitor ang Ghazhek and other instruments. Renowned artists, Sultanat, Laili and Marvori, from Xinjiang (China) also participated in the festival and performed dance and songs. Local artists trained at the Altit Music School also performed during the event.
Competition of dance was held among groups from various villages.
Gilgit-Baltistan Ministers, officials and people, Chinese artists and foreign tourists participated in the festival. Artists from both countries performed dances and sang songs to the delight of the audiences.The first day of the festival took place at Khunjerab National Park, which is situated at an altitude of about 15,000 feet. Stalls of traditional handicrafts and foods were also put up there. The second day of the event, shown in the video, was held at Gulmit in the Gojal area.
The famous Ismaili Wakhi singers Mr. Saltanat and Mrs. Lailee from Xinxiang Province China also participated in this festival and sang songs in Wakhi and Chinese languages. Their daughter Morvori, who is a famous artist, preformed her dance to local tunes and mesmerized the audience.
